THE GREED FOR MONEY: What Is Going On Here?

THE GREED FOR MONEY: What Is Going On Here?

It is indeed shocking that, despite consistently high international crude oil prices, Nigeria’s income from crude oil has been declining sharply, affecting state finances, foreign reserves and the naira against other currencies. In its bid to unravel the sharp practices in the NNPC, all the committees set up to investigate it has always come up with indicting verdicts but nothing had been done and no one has been brought to book.

Even with all the cries by the CBN governor that the NNPC is saying something different on paper and acting in a different manner financially with the apex bank, yet the Presidency is acting like it's business as usual.

No wonder APC national leader, Bola Tinubu described NNPC as President Jonathan's ATM. Really sad!

Catholic Archbishop Of Lagos Charges Political Office Holders On Improvement Of Nigerians’ Living Standard

Archbishop-A.-Adewale-Martins

The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins, on Tuesday appealed topublic office holders to demonstrate their commitment towards improving the living standard of the electorate.
Martins told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the utterances of many politicians were not geared towards achieving good governance, rather, overheating the polity.

“I think the heat that is there in the polity is affecting the quality of governance at this time.

“Those who have the charge of government now at different level need to not just be thinking about 2015 general elections but think about the present-day Nigeria and Nigerians.

“Think of how life is going to be made bearable, rather than creating the sort of tension that we are feeling at this point in time”.

He decried the undue attention being paid to the 2015 general elections, saying political leaders were losing focus on the needs of the majority of Nigerians. (NAN)

Why we kidnapped our grandma- Madueke brothers

LAST year December, Madam Adafor Madueke, an 89 year-old grandmother, was full of life as she was expecting her children and grand children residing outside her Amaeku village, Adazi Ani in Anaocha local government area of Anambra State, to return for Christmas celebrations.
The period usually provided her the opportunity to meet her loved ones and spend quality time with them.
However, unknown to Madam Madueke, two of her grandsons, Kingsley Chukwuebuka Madueke, 24, and Matthew Edozie Madueke, 22, were planning evil against her.
The two, who are undergraduates, had perfected plans with two other students, Chukwunonso Onuzulike, 23, from Enugu State and Gabriel Nnaji, 25, also from Enugu State, to abduct the Octogenarian for the purpose of extorting money from their uncle who had been responsible for their education over the years...

‘Flappy Bird’ Creator Pulled Game Down Because It Was Too ‘Addictive’

n-FLAPPY-BIRD-ADDICTIVE-large570
As of Sunday, “Flappy Bird” is dead and gone, and we finally have a full explanation as to why. According to its creator, it was just too addictive.

“Flappy Bird was designed to play in a few minutes when you are relaxed,” Dong Nguyen, the notoriously difficult-to-get-ahold-of game developer, told Forbes in an interview. “But it happened to become an addictive product. I think it has become a problem. To solve that problem, it’s best to take down Flappy Bird. It’s gone forever.”

Read Forbes’ entire interview with Nguyen here.

“My life has not been as comfortable as I was before,” Nguyen said. He also commented that he has hadtrouble sleeping. That was the sentiment he shared with his Twitter followers over the weekend while explaining his decision to ax the game.

In an earlier interview, Nguyen had attributed the rise of “Flappy Bird” to the top of Apple and Google’s app stores in January to “luck,” saying that the game took just two or three days of coding to create.

Bullying the South-South minorities

WHILE speaking recently on a current affairs programme on Liberty Radio, Kaduna, General Muhammadu Buhari boasted that the APC (All Progressives Congress) will wipe out the insecurity bedeviling Nigeria. The General conveniently forgot to tell us how he intends to do this. Since even the Americans with their military might and sophisticated intelligence outfits have not succeeded in wiping out Al Qaeda in over 25 years, one may well wonder how Buhari proposes to work his magic and wipe out the Boko Haram in Nigeria within four years.

Unless, of course, Buhari is inadvertently acknowledging what some have long suspected: that the escalation of the Boko Haram insurgency is essentially political; the outcome of the loss ofpolitical power by the Muslim North to the Christian South. Since the APC is now primarily an instrument for transferring power back to the North, then Buhari can be confident that the tide of Boko Haram terrorism up North against Christians will abate when and if a Muslim Northerner becomes president of Nigeria in 2015.

Biometric Capture Will Start This Week In Banks? "Says Lamido"

Nigeria's Bankers Committee rose from its 315th meeting and announced that the biometric registration of bank customers would commence on Friday this week. Consequently, Deposit Money Banks will commence the full capture of their customers’ details, including their fingerprints.
“Nigeria runs on cash; there is no identity. We don’t know who is who. We are now going into identity confirmation. We can now create a credit system that will power our economy.
“Banks don’t want to lend because of identity issue. We want to move Nigeria from cash system to credit system that has identity.”

These are the words of the Director, Corporate Communications Department of the CBN, Mr. Ugochukwu Okoroafor, who said the biometric system, when fully operational, would improve credit in the economy and boost Nigeria's macro-economy.
The Group Managing Director of Access Bank Plc, Mr. Herbert Wigwe, briefed journalists at the end of the bi-monthly meeting held in Lagos.
He said: "The banking industry, under the auspices of the Bankers’ Committee, has been working to improve the Know Your Customer requirement. The idea is to fight fraud, money laundering and ensure a better customer protection. The initiative will be launched this Friday, February 14."

Photos From The Mass Gay Wedding That Took Place At The 2014 Grammys

One of the biggest talking points of the 2014 Grammys, asides the robbery of Kendrick Lamar, was the mass gay weddings held inside the building.

Dozens of gay, straight and multiracial couples, brought together by big winners Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, got married live during the 56th Grammy Awards.

Heavily hyped in the hours leading up to Sunday night’s show, 34 couples, both gay and straight, exchanged rings and said “I do,” as officiated on stage by Queen Latifah.

As Macklemore & Ryan Lewis performed their song Same Love, which addresses the fight for same sex marriage, Queen Latifah officiated and Madonna performed during the nuptials.

The event took place on a stage set to resemble a giant chapel with stained-glass windows.

Jonathan begs Senators, Reps to pass 2014 budget

President Goodluck Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday appealed to members of the National Assembly to expedite action  on the 2014 Appropriation Bill  in order to enable  his administration to deliver dividends of democracy to the people.
Jonathan made the appeal during a stakeholders’ forum of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme held inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
When the debate on the bill entered the second day in the Senate on Wednesday, some Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress senators had described the document as anti-people.
They chided the  Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, for the way the bill was packaged and therefore called for its review.
It will be recalled that the APC  had last week directed its  members in the National Assembly to block the passage of the bill    and the screening of  ministerial nominees  as well as the Chief of Defence Staff and service chiefs.

Police Unmask Suspected Killers of NNPC Staff

IGP,-Mohammed-Abubakar.jpg - IGP,-Mohammed-Abubakar.jpg
Sixteen months after he was declared missing and is believed to have been killed, detectives from the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have unmasked the suspected killers of Mr. Sylvester Emefiele, a member of staff of the Transformation Office of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
Emefiele was reported to have left Lagos on September 23, 2012, following a call from his office asking him to report to Abuja on September 24, in order to process his visa to Hungary for a training programme. That became the last his family saw or knew of him.
The family having reported his disappearance to the police and after a fruitless frantic search, the police declared him missing. The police authorities soon commenced a discreet and comprehensive investigation into the case.
Subsequently, detectives from the FSARS led by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, swung into action, and after painstakingly following some leads, the detectives tracked down one Olaniyi Banjo, a 20-year-old resident of Ilesa, Osun State, who bought the Blackberry phone of the deceased from one of the principal suspects, Akindele Taiwo.

Bishop calls on Nigerian president to give military support to find militants

A bishop in northeastern Nigeria said the country's president must give the newly appointed military service chiefs the constitutional support for them to be able to flush out the Boko Haram militants.
"We need more security personnel in this part of the country, and it is only the new service chiefs that can deploy them to this area to crush the sects," Bishop Stephen Dami Mamza of Yola told Catholic News Service Jan. 29. "The soldiers, when deployed here, will be able to further weaken the strength of the Boko Haram and end the insurgency.''
Mamza spoke to CNS three days after 22 worshippers were killed immediately at a Catholic church in the village of Waga Chakawa in his state, Adamawa. He said the death toll had risen to 31, with 11 injured. They were among more than 70 people killed in one day in two separate attacks in two separate northeastern states, where the Islamist sect Boko Haram is resisting a military crackdown. Thousands have been killed since the sect launched an insurgency in 2009.

MEET Teenager, 19, Who Stopped Growing Just Before Her Second Birthday [PHOTOS]

Ajifa Khatun’s story could be something out of a horror movie but it is true indeed. At first glance she looks like a toddler but she is infact  a 19-year-old teenager who stopped growing just before her second birthday.

Ajifa  weighs just  1st 3lbs, plays with her siblings and mother, still needs to be spoon-fed and carried every where.

Her  mother, 42-year-old Apila gave birth to a healthy baby girl in 1994 who stared to walk and talk months later. Suddenly, her development stalled.

According to Daily Mail reports, Doctors initially told her mother and father, Sekh, 52, that Ajifa would start growing again.

They then blamed cancer for her condition, before suggesting that it could be a hormone disorder and the family are still at a loss as to why Ajifa is how she is.

Scientists believe that Ajifa could have Laron Syndrome, a rare genetic condition, which is believed to have affected just 300 people across the globe – with a third of them living in in remote villages in Ecuador’s southern Loja province.

Kano State Government Files For An Injunction Against Nigeria's Anti-corruption Agency

The Kano State Government filed an application today in Federal High Court seeking an injunction against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to restrain its budget investigation.
The injunction, if granted, would restrain EFCC agents from investigating the Kano State budget for 2012 and 2013.  The case filed in Federal High Court, Keno, lawsuit FHC/K/CS/06/2014, is pending before Justice Fatu Riman of Court 2.  The injunction would provide protections against investigation and arrest of officers and political appointees.
The motion was supported by a 30-paragraph affidavit sworn to by the Kano State Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Mr. Yusuf Bello Danbatta.
Justice Fatu Riman is the youngest Federal High Court judge in Nigeria, and legal commentators are watching to see how she will rule in this case.
In 2013 Judge Riman convicted Aminu Sule Lamido, the 34 year old son of Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, who was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for money laundering.  The court ordered him to forfeit 25 per cent of the undeclared $40,000.

Devout Christian dies from cannabis poisoning after smoking a joint in bed

Gemma Moss from Bouremouth, Dorset, is believed to have become the first woman in Britain to die directly from cannabis poisoning
A young mother of three died after she was poisoned by the cannabis she smoked to help her get to sleep.
Gemma Moss, 31, was killed by the level of the drug in her blood, an inquest heard.
The regular churchgoer, who was found dead in her bedroom, is thought to be the first woman in Britain known to have died directly from cannabis poisoning.
Her death was caused by cannabis toxicity, and a coroner recorded a verdict of death by cannabis abuse.
The inquest was told that Miss Moss smoked half a joint a night to help her sleep.
The devout Christian had  been a frequent user but stopped for two years before her death last October.
Her family say she started using the drug again to help her sleep after becoming depressed when she split up with her boyfriend.
A female friend told police Miss Moss smoked as much as £60 worth of the drug a week, although her family disputed this.
On the night of October 28  last year Miss Moss, who had two sons, Tyler, 15, and Tessiah, eight, and a daughter who lives abroad, went to bed after rolling a joint.
She was found the following morning by Tyler’s girlfriend who called an ambulance to the flat in Bournemouth.
Miss Moss was pronounced dead at the scene.
Half a joint was found underneath her body and a wrapper containing brown and green leaves of the class B drug was discovered in her handbag.
The mother-of-three gave up cannabis for two years, but had recently turned back to the drug in an effort to beat her insomnia

Her friend said she and Miss Moss smoked cannabis worth about £20 together in the week before her death
Gemma Moss, a 31-year-old churchgoer, collapsed in bed after smoking a cannabis cigarette
Her friend said she and Miss Moss smoked cannabis worth about £20 together in the week before her death
A post mortem examination revealed that there were no obvious signs of abnormality in Miss Moss’s body. Pathologist Dr Kudair Hussein told the inquest in Bournemouth there were ‘moderate to heavy’ levels of cannabis-related chemicals in her blood.
Bournemouth coroner Mr Sheriff Payne asked Dr Hussein: ‘You are satisfied it was the effects of cannabis that caused her death?’ Dr Hussein replied: ‘Yes sir.’
In 2004 a 36-year-old man from Pembrokeshire became the first known person in the UK to die from cannabis toxicity.
A spokesman for the National Drug Prevention Alliance, David Raynes, said: ‘It is extremely rare and unusual for a coroner to rule death from cannabis abuse.
‘This case serves as a warning that cannabis can cause immense harm. Cannabis is known to increase heart rate and blood pressure. Cannabis these days is designed to be much stronger to meet demand of users who want a stronger hit.’
Tests of her vital organs found nothing wrong with them although it was suggested she might have suffered a cardiac arrest triggered by cannabis toxicity

Miss Moss regularly attended the evangelical Citygate Church in Bournemouth and was baptised there last year.
Miss Furness said: ‘It was one half of a joint to get to sleep. She never smoked in the day. She was really honest about cannabis. She was trying to stop again. She wasn’t excessively smoking.’
In recording a verdict that Miss Moss died from drug abuse, Mr Payne said: ‘Gemma had been a long-term user of cannabis.
‘She suffered from depression and was on prescription drugs to try and deal with that although it would not appear she was taking them at the time of her death.
‘She usually used it (cannabis) in the evenings to try and help her to get to sleep and did not use it in the daytime.
‘The post mortem could find  no natural cause for her death with the balance of probability that it is more likely than  not that she died from the effects of cannabis.’
Carolyn Stuart, a coroner’s officer, said: ‘It is very rare to have cannabis toxicity as a cause of death. She was a healthy 31-year-old woman who had nothing wrong with her.’
Russell White, a leader at  the Citygate Church, said: ‘Gemma was a good mother  and brought up her children mainly on her own.
‘She was full of fun and loved life and loved coming to church. She was a committed member of the church and brought her children along.
'She is very much missed and her death was a real shock to us.’
Miss Moss lived with her sons but it is believed her daughter lives with her father in Jamaica

CANNABIS: THE RISKS (AND MEDICAL BENEFITS) OF THE CONTROVERSIAL CLASS B DRUG

One minor toxic side-effect of taking cannabis is the short-term effect on the heart and vascular system.
This can lead to significant increases in heart rate and a lowering of the blood pressure. For this reason patients with a history of angina or other cardiovascular disease could be at risk.
In Britain, official government statistics listed five deaths from cannabis in the period 1993-1995, but a House of Lords Report from 1998 reports that on closer examination these proved to have been deaths due to inhalation of vomit that could not be directly attributed to cannabis.
Cannabis impairs psychomotor performance in a wide variety of tasks, and fatal accidents, such as from car crashes or from operating heavy machinery, have been recorded.
However, several studies have demonstrated the therapeutic effects of cannabinoids for nausea and vomiting in the advanced stages of illnesses such as cancer and AIDS.
An active ingredient, tetrahydrocannabinol, has been available by prescription for more than a decade in the USA.
Other therapeutic uses of cannabinoids are being demonstrated by controlled studies, including treatment of asthma and glaucoma.

APC senators unite against Okonjo-Iweala

Senators elected on both the PDP and APC platforms, yesterday, united against the Co-ordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, blaming her for the country’s economic woes.

They specifically accused the minister of imposing the economic policies of the International Monetary Fund, IMF and the World Bank on Nigeria.

The senators also accused themselves of being part of the problem in the non-implementation of previous budgets in the country, pointing out that this was because they had not been living up to their constitutional responsibilities in the discharge of their oversight functions.

Deputy Senate Leader, Abdul Ningi, PDP, Bauchi Central, cautioned against Nigeria depending on the policies of the IMF, the World Bank and other advanced economies of the world, adding that the country should evolve indigenous economic policies that would impact positively on the people.
He hinged his argument on the premise that western economies were collapsing, unlike the home-grown economies of India and China, which according to him were waxing stronger by the day.
